Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) boss Pavel Oimeke has resigned after a four-year stint at the energy regulatory agency amid a bribery case against him.

In a statement on Tuesday, said he submitted his resignation to the Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter on February 16.

“I Pavel Robert Oimeke, EBS would like to announce my resignation from the position of director-general at the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority,” he said.

Oimeke was arrested on December 10, 2020 by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission(EACC) on allegations of bribery, before he was set free.

Consequently, the board suspended Oimeke and in his place appointed Mr Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria in an actingcapacity.

“The EPRA Board, upon taking into account the official communication from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, as well as the pertinent facts, has today taken the decision, firstly, to interdict Mr Oimeke as Director General and, on the recommendation of the Cabinet Secretary for Energy Mr Charles Keter, to appoint an Acting Director General, Mr Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria whose appointment takes effect immediately,” said EPRA Board chairman Prof. Jackton Ojwang.

According to EACC, Oimeke received a bribe of Ksh200,000 to approve the reopening of a fuel station in Oyugis, Homa Bay County,  which the authority had closed.

Oimeke’s first term at the helm expired on August 1, but was reappointed for another three-year-term on July 27.

However, a petitioner,  Emannuel Wanjala, moved to court to block his re-appointment, accusing him of colluding with illegal LPG dealers, nepotism, tribalism and favouritism.

Oimeke was however cleared of the allegations for lack of evidence.

“I take this opportunity to wish the best of luck to the current acting director general Mr Daniel Kiptoo and the EPRA board and staff as they continue to serve Kenyans. I am looking forward to serving Kenyans in other capacities,” he said.
