Fines You Risk For Flouting Michuki Rules

The government has declared that there will be no drawing back in the enforcement of the famous Michuki rules as from Monday, November 12.

However, very little is known on the consequences of flouting the rules, which have been disregarded for years since the exit of John Michuki who was the Minister for transport, and pioneered the rules.

Any vehicle lacking lifesavers the owner will part with Ksh 2,000, while failure to display lifesavers when needed will attract a Ksh3,000 fine.

Matatu owners/operators will pay Ksh1,000 for missing seat belts while passengers who fail to wear them will part with Ksh500. Worn out or dirty seat belts will attract a Ksh500 fine.

Missing Identification Plates will attract Ksh10,000 fine. Rogue drivers driving on pedestrian walkaways will pay Ksh5,000 whilst causing obstruction will make you Ksh10,000 poorer.

Failure to follow traffic sign will see you part with Ksh3,000, while failure to stop when ordered will rob you off Ksh5,000.

Lacking valid or appropriate licence will be fined Ksh7,000, while failure to renew driving licence will see you part with Ksh1,000 in fine, the same with failure to produce a driving licence.

Driving while using a mobile phone will see you part with Ksh2,000 while learners without “L” plates (Front and rear ) will be charged Ksh1,000.

Driving a PSV while unqualified will be charged Ksh7,000. Letting an authorized person drive a PSV, unlicensed conductor or a driver of a PSV will be fined Ksh5,000.

PSVs picking or dropping at undesignated stops will pay Ksh1,000 in fines. Lack of speed governors for PSVs will attract a Ksh10,000 fine.

Having part of the body outside a moving vehicle will be fined Ksh1,000 while touting will be charged Ksh5,000.

Any motorcycle rider without protective gear will pay Ksh1,000, the same with a passenger without a protective gear.
Exceeding the speed limit(80Kph) for PSVs will attract between Ksh500 to Ksh10,000 in fines (1-5Kph-Ksh500, 6-10Kph-Ksh3,000, 11-15Kph-Ksh6,000 and 16-20Kph-Ksh10,000)
