All telecommunication companies in Ghana have been directed by the government to do away with expiry of data bundles and airtime, a practice that is common in most countries.

Ghana has four major telecommunication companies which include MTN, Vodafone, Airtel Tigo and Glo, and all will be affected by the directive.

“All unused data and voice bundles purchased by subscribers do not expire and must be rolled over with the next recharge,” a letter from Ghana’s ministry of communications to the director general of their national communications authority and copied to all the telcos stated.

In Ghana, only only Airtel Tigo offers data bundles that do not expire.

The letter signed by the minister in charge of the sector, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful also said telcos in Ghana should stop the instant deduction of the Communications Service Tax (CST).

The tax, which is levied on consumers, was increased by 3 percent from six percent to nine.

The measure was put in place to reduce the negative impact of deduction of the tax.

The move could have a ripple effect on other African countries where data bundles and airtime have expiry dates.
