List Of People Who Have Taken Pay Cuts Over Covid-19 Pandemic

On March 25, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced voluntary salary cuts by the Executive and senior members of the government.

He announced that his Deputy William Ruto and himself will take a pay cut of 80 percent. Currently, the Presidents earns Ksh1.44 million per month, and the reduction will see him receive Ksh288,000. It is not clear whether DP Ruto has accepted the pay cut or not.

Cabinet Secretaries and Chief Administrative Secretaries were to take a voluntary pay cut of 30 percent, while Principal Secretaries are supposed to take a 20 percent pay cut. All the three categories have remained mum since then.

Last week, National Assembly and Senate speakers Justin Muturi and Kenneth Lusaka agreed to take a 30 per cent pay cut to aid in the fight against coronavirus as proposed by the President.

The MPs have however refused to take the pay cuts, playing the tactic of buying more time in the name of consultations, while opposing the pay cuts behind the curtains.

Also, Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang and his deputy Yulita Cheruiyot announced that they would be taking a 30 percent pay cut in March and April due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Royal Media Services (RMS) has has also notified all its employees of a plan to reduce their gross salary by 20-30 percent

Kenyan Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz became the first team to announce that players will be taking pay a 50 percent cuts.

Kenya Airways Chief Executive Officer Allan Kilavuka took an 80 percent cut while all KQ workers took between 25 to 50 percent pay cuts subject to their grade. Top managers were also not exempted taking 75 percent pay cuts.

All the 47 county governors and their deputies will voluntarily take a 30 percent cut with the County Executive Committee members’ salaries getting slashed by 20 percent.
