From rags to riches is Francis Munyao alias MCA Tricky’s story, but many think that his story is a narrative of ‘from streets to the screens’.

In 2016, Tricky mad a dubut to the screens on Churchill Show, using the stage name MC Tricky, with a narrative that he was a chokoraa, a name given to street urchins. He drove the narrative so well, left so many in stitches, and on top, ,eft them believing that he was a street urchin.

However, it emerges that Trickey was at that time in his third year at Kenyatta University pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. But his studies were such ‘a big secret’, owing to the fact that not even the Churchill Show host Daniel Ndambuki, aka Churchill knew he was in university on debut.

Most people came to know of his studies on December 20, 2019, when he graduated from the University.

But why did he keep it under wraps?

As quoted by the Nation, Tricky says that he wanted to study in peace, since “anyone who deserved to know knew”.

“The people who knew are the ones who should have known. In KU, comrades knew me. I would perform there as MCA Tricky. But I wouldn’t take a vuvuzela and a trumpet and start walking in town announcing that I’m in class,” said the comedian.

At one time, the comedian says that he was a homeless street boy but it was more because he was out to make money, at one time taking a job as a porter.

“I was a normal hustler in Nairobi. I would look at my dad, who struggled to raise even Ksh100 for my fare. So instead of asking for it and humiliating him, I would toil hard,” he tells the publication.

Tricky now works as a stand-up comedian at Churchill Show and also as a radio presenter at Standard Group’s Radio Maisha.

In one of his ambitions, he tells Nation that he wants to help his family first, before thinking about himself (accumulating wealth).

“If the celeb life found me in a well-off family, I would be far by now, driving Range Rovers. But I cannot buy a Range Rover and my sister is not in school or has no certificate. I have to keep it low and move with them because they are the ones who brought me up,” says Tricky.

He also plans to drop the street urchin brand in future. About his engineering career, he plans to remain in comedy for now, but wants to “do something related to my career (engineering).”

“But for now, let’s do comedy,” he says.
