Nairobi Hospital Suspends Top Directors Days After New CEO Was Announced

Nairobi Hospital CEO Dr Allan Pamba has announced the sacking of Dr Christopher Abeid, the director of medical services and research, and Benta Omonge, director nursing services. The two have been replaced by Dr Aysha Edwards and Margaret Sirima respectively.

This comes after repoerts that Tom Simba, head of customer service and marketing as well as the finance director, procurement, support Services, credit control and a raft of others were also asked to quit last week.

In a memo dated March 23, Dr Pamba announced that Dr Aysha and Mrs Sirima will join the reconstituted Covid-19 Task Force.

“The hospital is currently going through a transition and it is in this backdrop we wish to announce the following changes to the senior team effective immediately. Dr Aysha assumes immediate leadership of TNH Covid-19 Task Force. Mrs Sirima will ensure the department fully supports Dr Aysha and the reconstituted Covid-19 Task Force,” said Dr Pamba.

Dr Pamba was announced as a substantive CEO this month, taking over from Dr Abeid who served as the acting CEO following the ouster of former CEO Gordon Odundo who was fired in April last year.

In an extraordinary general meeting held lats year, the members of the Kenya Hospital Association — which owns the hospital — voted in a new board led by Dr Irungu Ndirangu (chair) and Dr Chris Bichage (vice-chairman).

Members appointed include Robert Shaw, Victor Miseda, Maxwell Odongo, Charles Amira, Charles Wambugu and Dr Stephen Ochiel.

The ousted directors  were accused of poor oversight of infrastructure projects at the hospital, whose costs are said to be inflated.

Hiring of top executives was also said to have been irregular. The board had failed to file tax returns for eight years.
