The family that owns Naivas Supermarket has announced that they are closing their Kitengela branch, due to a series of underperformance.
The branch which was opened four months ago will be merged with the Lang’ata branch, at Freedom Height Mall.
The Lang’ata branch is located opposite Uchumi Hypermarket, and the move seems like a stride in heightening competition for Uchumi for high-end shoppers from Karen and Lang’ata.
“We will be closing the Kitengela Mall branch in the next two weeks … We want to ensure we are more accessible and align to new store strategy,” said Naivas chief commercial officer Willy Kimani during an interview.
The retailer had hoped to tap into Kitengela’s potential for formal retail on account of its location adjacent to the busy Nairobi- Namanga highway.
The move effectively reduces the retailer’s total store count to 45 countrywide.
