Born on July 17, 1972, Prof Abraham Kithure Kindiki is the third Deputy President for Kenya, replacing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who was impeached on October 17, 2024.

An advocate of the High Court and the International Criminal Court (ICC), Prof. Kindiki obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from Moi University and a Diploma in Legal Studies from the Kenya School of Law. He also holds a Master’s degree in International Human Rights Law & Democracy and a PhD in International Law, both from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.

Earlier in his career, Prof. Kindiki was a lecturer at the Moi University. He also served as a Senior Lecturer and the Head of the Department of Public Law at the University of Nairobi. He rose to be an Associate Dean at the School of Law in the same institution. He also served as the Secretary of National Cohesion under President Mwai Kibaki.

Kithure Kindiki’s Political Career

Prof. Kindiki is the immediate former Senator, Tharaka-Nithi County. He was first elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. He was the Senate Majority Leader during the 2013–2017 term and the Deputy Speaker of the Senate from August 2017 to 2020.

A distinguished scholar in International human rights law, Prof. Kindiki has consulted for local and international organisations including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) among others. He is a member of the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS), the International Association on the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM), the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the International Commission of Jurists, Kenya Chapter (ICJ-K).

Kindiki was among the top candidates considered to be William Ruto’s running mates for his presidential campaign. However, Rigathi Gachagua was chosen instead. Kindiki was instead appointed to serve as the Cabinet Secretary of the Interior Ministry.[

Kindiki was dismissed from the cabinet on July 11, 2024, but was reappointed back to the cabinet on July 19, 2024, as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Administration of National Government.

He married Joyce Gatiiria Njagi in 2001. They have three children.

Kindiki’s wealth

In August 2024, Kindiki revealed that his net worth has jumped Ksh150 million since his first appointment as CS in October 2022.

Kindiki, who served in the Interior docket before President William Ruto dissolved his Cabinet on July 11, told Parliament during his vetting that his wealth has since increased from Ksh544 million to Ksh694 million.

He attributed the growth to his law firm.

“I said at that time, which I still do now, that I run a business which today even if I do not practise law, is working and much of that revenue has come from it. It is still active and being managed by other people,” he said.
