Fear is gone: How Morara Kebaso is steadfastly pushing the #NaneNane online movement

As the #NaneNane date grows near, one Kenyan has displayed an umtached steadfastness in pushing the narrative, pressuring the government and putting President William Ruto on his toes.

Morara Kebaso, a 28-year old business guru and lawyer, has emerged from the shadows as one of the most prominent and indefatigable warriors of the protest movement, fearlessly dedicating his time and resources to call for better governance and an open legislative path.

At first, Kebaso did not put so much thought into it, as he perched on top of his car, to deliver a message to Kenyans in a way and language they can best understand.But as the videos continued to gain traction and spread across the Internet, Kebaso appears to have found a calling and, along the way, restructured his messaging and delivery, eventually winning over legions of fans with his unique trade of comedy fused with civic education.

“My intention is to speak to the most average Kenyan in a way they can understand me. Politicians love to address us on top of their vehicles and I thought to myself, “What better way to deliver my message than to mimic their style?”” he says.

Just a month after he began the online civic education, Morara’s activism has shot through the roof as the youthful business guru continues to create shockwaves in the Gen Z movement, sharing daily videos and brazenly addressing the powers-that-be.

In one such video, shared just a day ago, a straight-faced Kebaso speaks directly to the camera, addressing the President and reminding him that Kenyans are not afraid of him – even though they respect him.

“Mr. President, we are not afraid of you. We respect you, but we are not afraid. Do not confuse silence for peace. Kenyans are angry. Still waters run deep. If we don’t die of police brutality, we will die out of stress and depression…” he says, without batting an eyelid.

In the same video, a sharp-shooting Kebaso warns the President of repercussions if he ignores the voice of the people, clearly telling him that Kenyans know what they want, but that the President was forcing himself on the populace.

“We know the solutions to our problems, but you are not giving us an opportunity. We know what’s best for us, but you are forcing your plans on us,” he says.

“We want to determine our future and right now, you are our biggest obstacle!”Kebaso’s unfiltered videos have galvanised the nation, as he appears to be one of the most impressive and steadfast voices for the upcoming #NaneNane march to be staged in the Nairobi CBD.

A former drama star in high school, and who also found himself in a litany of troubles in Campus, Kebaso has employed his impeccable acting skills to diversify his content delivery – sometimes, even acting as a Kenyan Bishop on a trip to State House.In his latest video in that role, Kebaso leads a sarcastic prayer, injecting spiritual wisdom creatively, while, indirectly, poking holes at the government.

“This bible that he carries and these knees that he kneels down to worship you, may it mean something…” he ‘prays’.

“Reach out your hand into his heart, turn it into a heart of flesh from a heart to stone…”Kebaso, a sure creative genius, even infuses humor in his delivery, appearing to mock and at the same time, implore the President, albeit wryly.

Already, the #NaneNane movement has become wildly popular online, with thousands of Kenyans, on multiple social media platforms, pushing the hashtag and spreading the message.

“On that day, we shall have a meeting with the President. I implore all Nairobians to welcome their mates from upcountry and to also be on the lookout for the police and the DCI officers,” Kebaso says in a video.

“We have to tell the President, ‘You’ve been playing us for long. You’ve killed our young men and women. But we are here to tell you, the voice of people is the voice of God’!”

Kebaso’s activism has already seen him shoot to close to 60k Tiktok followers in just four weeks – with a jump of 10k followers in just 48 hours after granting an exclusive interview with Citizen TV.”I’m glad the young people are listening and paying attention. I’ll do the best I can to maximise the messaging,” he says.

“We are the people and we shall make sure this country is upright. On the 8th of August, we hope the President is ready to listen and act!”
