The Government of Kenya has released a list of organisations that have received millions from the Ford Foundation between April 2023 and May 2024.

According to the government, the firms received a total of USD 5.78 million (approximately Ksh752 million) between April 2023 and May 2024, with unexplained expedited funding amounting to USD 1.49 M (approximately Ksh194 million) – over the last month alone.

“Deeply concerning is that most of the Grantees have been at the centre of the Anti-Finance Bill protests and the subsequent anarchic mobilizations that have sought to upend the peace and security of the state,” Korir Sing’oei, the PS for State Department for Foreign Affairs said in a letter to Darren Walker, the President of the Ford Foundation.

The firms are as follows;

• Africa Uncensored Limited (Project Mulika) (USD 250,000)

• Women’s Link Worldwide: (USD 750.000)

• Centre for Resource Mobilization and Development: (USD 20,000)

• Transform Empowerment for Action Initiative: (USD 220,000)

• Kenya Human Rights Commission: (USD 600.000)

• Open Institute Trust: (USD 100,000)

• Africa Centre for Open Governance: (USD 200.000)

• National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders (K): (USD 257,000)

• thinning Hope for Communities Inc.: (USD 2,050,000)

• Coalition for Grassroots Human Rights Defenders Kenya (USD 250,000)

• Community Aid International: (USD 100,000)

• Mzalendo Trust: (USD 335.000)

• Usikimye (Femicide): (USD 30,000)

The government is now demanding full details of the grantees over the last year, the programmes approved (particularly over the last three months), budgets for each project, the amounts so far disbursed and what is pipelined for disbursement.

The government has also asked for reports from the grantees detailing the activities carried out, the cost of these activities and their beneficiaries:

“Share a report on Ford Foundation’s compliance with its Non-Lobbying Policy or a statement that this policy is inapplicable to its activities in the country. Prescribe any sanctions you will impose for breaches of the law or your internal policies,” the letter added.
