It was a Kibugu affair on Sunday as brothers Njoroge and Mutahi delivered a thrilling neck-and-neck battle in the final round of the seventh leg of the PGK Equator Tour at Sigona Golf Club.
Emerging victorious was the younger sibling, Njoroge Kibugu, who produced a brilliant 9-under-par 279 over four rounds to secure his first-ever PGK Equator Tour title. He finished just one stroke ahead of his elder brother, Mutahi Kibugu, a Safaricom-sponsored golfer who carded an impressive 8-under-par 280 to tie for second place with fellow Safaricom teammate Samuel Njoroge.
“It was amazing playing against my brother. I was a bit tense, especially when he overtook me around hole 9, but I managed to compose myself and recover. Our family was so happy, cheering and rallying behind us. For them, it didn’t matter who won, it was about the great game we played and the healthy pressure we put on each other,” said Njoroge after lifting the trophy.
Mutahi, who pushed the contest to the wire, praised the competition and the quality of play displayed by the field.
“I would say this has been one of the most competitive tournaments so far. Going head-to-head with my brother Njoroge was incredible — everyone brought their A-game despite the pressure. What really matters is the quality of golf we all played. The fairways were really good, and I’m very pleased with my performance. As Team Safaricom, this is a fantastic result. We continue to lead the overall standings, and with two legs remaining, we’re aiming to finish at the top,” he said.
Snow Greg claimed fourth place with a 5-under-par 283, while Edwin Mudanyi followed in fifth at 4-under-par 284. The rest of the top 10 included Dismas Indiza (287), David Wahu (290), Mohit Mediratta (291), CJ Wangai (291), and Kennedy Abuto (293).
With two legs remaining, Team Safaricom, comprising Mutahi Kibugu, Samuel Njoroge, Mohit Mediratta, and Mathew Wahome, continues to dominate the leaderboard, sitting first overall with 7,575 points.
Kenya Airways Team holds second position with 5,635 points, followed by Visa Team in third at 4,745 points. John Walker Team is fourth with 4,460 points, NCBA Team sits fifth, while Britam Team rounds out the top six with 1,810 points.
The competition is heating up as players chase crucial qualification points ahead of the 2025 Magical Kenya Open and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Safaricom has committed KSh 3 million over three years to support its four professional golfers on the tour.
