Kenyan athletes who bring home medals will now walk away with record-breaking cash rewards after President William Ruto unveiled a new package aimed at recognising sporting excellence.

Speaking at State House during a luncheon in honour of outstanding athletes, the Head of State announced that winners of Olympic gold medals will now pocket KSh3 million, up from KSh750,000. Silver medalists will take home KSh2 million (previously KSh500,000), while bronze winners will receive KSh1 million, nearly triple the old KSh350,000.

In team sports, each player will be awarded KSh750,000 for gold, KSh500,000 for silver, and KSh375,000 for bronze, a significant increase from the earlier KSh100,000, KSh75,000, and KSh50,000 respectively.

“So far, payouts amounting to KSh55 million have been scheduled for recent events, alongside an additional KSh15 million for record-breaking performances,” Ruto said.

The President added that the Ministry of Sports can also recommend qualification bonuses of up to KSh2.5 million for teams and athletes competing for slots in major championships.

Beyond financial rewards, Dr Ruto outlined sweeping reforms, including the establishment of 37 Constituency Sports Academies, continued investment in modern stadiums such as Kasarani, Nyayo, and Talanta Sports City, and a review of the Sports Act (2013) to improve governance and athlete welfare.

“Our overarching vision is to position Kenya as a global sports powerhouse. To all our athletes: you are the pride of our nation. Your courage and discipline have inspired millions beyond our borders,” he said.

The announcement comes on the heels of Harambee Stars’ inspiring run at CHAN 2024, where the team defied odds to reach the knockout stages. President Ruto noted that the success of Stars and other athletes reflects Kenya’s potential when discipline, unity, and talent are nurtured.

“You remind us that greatness is never an accident. It is earned through sacrifice, resilience, and self-belief,” Ruto told the athletes.
