Safaricom Announces Extra Airtime For Customers As VAT Slash Takes Effect

Safaricom has announced more airtime for its pre-paid customers from today, following government’s move to slash Value Added Tax (VAT) rates by 2 percent from from 16 to 14 percent.

As a result, customers will get a 2 percent extra airtime upon recharge. For instance, a customer who tops up Ksh100 will receive KSh102 airtime.

Also, all Home Fibre customers will get back 2 percent, the cost of the package as a credit to their Home Fibre account.

“Pricing for all devices including smartphones at all Safaricom Shops and on Masoko have been reduced to reflect the 14, VAT. Pricing for all Personal Postpaid, Fibre for Business and for all Corporate Postpaid product and services including Zidisha Plus, Cloud, Security, Collocation, and IOT have been reduced to reflect 14%, VAT and shall be reflected in the next monthly invoice,” Safaricom said on Wednesday.

President Uhuru Kenyatta last Wednesday directed VAT be reduced to 14 per cent from 16 per cent and Corporation Tax reduced from 30 per cent to 25 per cent. The turnover tax rate was reduced from three per cent to one per cent, falling within the wish of manufacturers.
