Flutterwave has appointed Guo Songmei as Regional Vice President of Sales and Partnerships for Greater China and Asia, in a move aimed at accelerating its commercial expansion and strengthening payment links between the two regions.

Songmei, who will be based between Shenzhen, China, and Hong Kong, will oversee commercial growth, develop partnerships with Chinese payment providers and build enterprise payment corridors connecting Asian businesses to African markets.

The appointment comes as the Nigerian-founded payments technology company marks its 10th anniversary and seeks to expand its enterprise business across high-growth international trade routes.

Songmei brings more than 20 years of experience in cross-border corporate and commercial banking across Africa, Greater China and Asia.

Before joining Flutterwave, she served as Executive Director for Greater China Sales and Business Development at a Malaysia-based information technology software-as-a-service and payment orchestration firm, where she led market entry, onboarded enterprise merchants and established distribution partnerships with licensed non-bank acquiring institutions.

Her previous roles include establishing and expanding China Business franchises at Stanbic IBTC and Access Bank in Nigeria, where she helped facilitate cumulative cross-border transactions approaching $1 billion and structured supply chain and infrastructure financing.

She also managed Chinese corporate relationships across West Africa for Standard Chartered Bank in Ghana and held senior corporate banking positions at HSBC in China and OCBC Bank in Malaysia and Singapore.

Flutterwave founder and Chief Executive Officer Olugbenga “GB” Agboola said the appointment would strengthen the company’s capacity to connect international trade with African markets.

“As Flutterwave enters its next decade of growth, we are scaling the critical corridors that connect global trade directly into African markets,” Agboola said, adding that Songmei’s experience building China-Africa banking operations and her institutional relationships across both regions would support the company’s expansion plans.

Asia-Africa payments corridor in focus

Flutterwave said companies in East Asia processed nearly $1 billion in transactions through its platform during the first half of 2025, serving customers in Africa.

The company plans to build on this activity by expanding enterprise payment services, including multi-currency accounts, local payout networks and compliant settlement solutions across more than 30 African markets.

These services are intended to help Asian enterprises manage foreign exchange exposure, reduce settlement delays and navigate the complexities of making payments across different African markets.

Businesses operating along the Asia-Africa corridor often face challenges involving multiple currencies, foreign exchange costs and differences in local payment systems. Flutterwave is seeking to address these issues by providing payment infrastructure that supports cross-border collections and settlements.

Songmei said dependable payment systems and greater predictability in foreign exchange transactions would be important for Asian companies seeking to expand into African markets.

She added that she would work with Flutterwave’s global teams and institutional partners to reduce payment friction and support the growth of cross-border trade.
