Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has reduced the cost of electricity for domestic and small commercial consumers by Ksh2 and Ksh5 Kilowatts per hour respectively.

The charge for domestic consumers will now retail at Ksh10/KWh down from Ksh12KWh, for those who spend less than 100KWh.

“This amendment is aimed at increasing the share of manufacturing, food security and Nutrition, Universal healthcare and Housing inline with the big four Agenda,” Energy Regulatory Commission Director General Pavel Oimeke said.

Charges for 100 units and above have been maintained.

The reduction comes a week after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a reduction in the cost of electricity for the SMEs sector, which employs 75 per cent of the national workforce, within one month.

Consequently, Kenya Power has announced a 14-hour shutdown of the pre-paid service to implement the changes. The service will be off from Wednesday midnight to Thursday 2pm.
