How to File Tax Returns Using KRA’s WhatsApp System
Filing tax returns in Kenya no longer requires long queues or logging in to a computer, thanks to a WhatsApp-based service launched by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
The platform, popularly known as KRA Care, allows taxpayers to file nil returns and access basic tax services through a simple chat interface, making compliance easier for millions of Kenyans.
A simpler way to file returns
The WhatsApp service is designed primarily for individuals with straightforward tax obligations, particularly those filing nil returns. It offers a guided, step-by-step process that eliminates the need to navigate the more complex iTax portal.
To get started, users need to save KRA’s official WhatsApp number and initiate a conversation by sending a simple message such as “Hi” or “File returns.” An automated chatbot then provides a menu of options.
Taxpayers can select the return filing option and proceed to choose nil return filing if applicable.
Step-by-step process
Once the process begins, users are prompted to enter their KRA PIN for identification. The system may request additional verification details before displaying the taxpayer’s registered information.
After confirming that the details are correct, the user can proceed to submit the return. Upon successful filing, a confirmation message is sent via WhatsApp, with an official receipt also delivered to the taxpayer’s registered email address.
The entire process typically takes just a few minutes.
Who can use the service
The WhatsApp filing system is best suited for:
- Individuals with no income to declare
- Students and unemployed persons
- First-time taxpayers
However, taxpayers with more complex income streams, such as business or employment income, are still required to file returns through the iTax platform.
Convenience and accessibility
The introduction of WhatsApp filing is part of KRA’s broader push to digitise tax services and improve accessibility.
By leveraging a widely used messaging platform, the authority aims to reduce barriers to compliance, particularly for users without regular access to computers or cyber cafés.
The service is also expected to reduce last-minute congestion on the iTax system, especially as the annual filing deadline approaches.
Stay compliant
KRA requires all registered taxpayers to file their annual returns by June 30 each year. Failure to do so attracts penalties, even for those filing nil returns.
Taxpayers are advised to ensure they are interacting with KRA’s official WhatsApp number to avoid fraud and protect personal information.
With the new system, filing returns is now as easy as sending a message—offering a fast, convenient and user-friendly alternative for millions of Kenyans.
